The Public Inquiry

The Public Enquiry has now taken place and we are now awaiting the results, from the reporters. This will happen sometime around early summer.

The inquiry started on MONDAY 8 FEBRUARY 2010 at the ROYAL BRITISH LEGION, BAILEYFIELD ROAD.

Viridor representatives gave their evidence for the first three days of the inquiry, followed by the Joint Action Group, with representations on behalf of PONGS, Portobello Amenity Society, Portobello Community Council, Brightons and Rosefield Residents’ Association and the Christians residents, as well as representations on visual impact, sustainability and planning issues. Local councillors and our MSP also appeared.

Planning documents online can be found at www.dpea.scotland.gov.uk or 'phone 01324 696400, quoting reference number PPA-230-1061 or simply use the link on the website menu.

We engaged the services of a planning consultant and a QC, both with lots of experience of PLIs. This gave us the best chance of success.

We aimed to raise around £35,000 from the community in a short space of time to pay for expert witnesses to represent us. Portobello Community Council and Portobello Amenity Society both pledged £1,000 to the campaign funds, and we have received a number of very generous donations. This, together with the money raised through our events has taken us now well past the £30,000 mark. Hooray! A massive thank you to all who have contributed.

Since summer 2009 a whole series of exciting fundraising events has taken place, organised by our tireless volunteers (for more details, see under Our Fundraising Efforts).
